INTERVIEW WITH ATTICUS
Earlier this week, I was lucky enough to have a conversation with the man everyone is talking about. That man is Atticus Finch. I asked him about how his family was reacting to his defense of Tom Robinson, a local black man who had been accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. He replied, “My children support me completely, but the rest of my family has been very skeptical about it, and sometimes the younger ones tease my children about it.” I asked them how this had affected his children, and he said that they are very strong-willed, and they would not let teasing get to them.
His two children, Scout and Jem, go to the Maycomb County School. There, many of their classmates have teased them, and even attempted top pick fights with them, all because their father was defending a black man in the court of law. “I thought the people in this town had higher standards and better morals than this,” said Atticus. “Apparently, now their true colors are showing.” But even though all these people are against what Atticus is doing, there are still people that side with his decision. For example, all the black people that live in Maycomb County, Miss Maudie, his sister Alexandra, and the list goes on. “I believe in Atticus,” said his sister. “He always has a way of pulling through the tight times.
